Nobel Laureate Week 2002

²    Activities:

o       Choral Speaking – “Winning Words, Winning Ways

A script containing excerpts from the Writings of and about Sir William Arthur Lewis.

 

o       Unveiling of Busts of Nobel Laureates at the Derek Walcott Square . This occasion was not only to honour the Laureates, but also to recognise the achievements of other St. Lucians for whom excellence is a goal.

 

o       The Derek Walcott Lecture was presented by Dr. Antonia MacDonald-Smythe on the topic: “In Celebration of the Provincial in the St. Lucian Arts.” Her presentation examined the style and concerns which characterise the creative works of St. Lucian artists such as Derek Walcott, Garth St. Omer, Harold Simmons and Dunstan St. Omer.

 

o       Schools’ Programme: “The Making of a Laureate”. Several schools, both at the Primary and Secondary level, took part in this cultural programme. They contributed through song, music, poetry, dance and drama.

 

o       Opening of the Millennium Organigeometric Art Exhibition by Cedric George, a well known painter and graphic designer, at the Alliance Française Pyramid, in Pointe Seraphine. Organometrix is a communicative painting concept which Cedric George developed in 1987 at the Edna Manley School of the Visual Arts.

 

o       A seminar for Secondary School Students in fourth and fifth form was held by Dr. Antonia MacDonald-Smythe in an effort to help them in “Understanding Poetry”.

 

o       A Creole version of Derek Walcott’s “Sea at Dauphin” was staged at the Piaye Community Center .

 

o       The Annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony took place at the grave of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College .

 

o       The Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture was presented by Professor Norman Girvan, Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States. He lectured on the topic: “Transnational Corporation and the Transfer of Knowledge”.

 

o       The annual M&C Fine Arts Awards Ceremony  

 

o       Exhibition entitled: “Over-comers: Winning against all Odds”, mounted by the Nobel Laureate Committee in collaboration with The National Archives Authority. The goal of the exhibition was to highlight the achievements of some citizens who have excelled in their field against all odds.
