  Observation of Nobel Laureate Week

²    Theme:   A Society without the Arts is a Cultural Desert (Sir William Arthur Lewis)

²    Focus:    Cultural and artistic promotion and development: one of the five elements of the Policy Framework outlined in the National Cultural Policy.

²    Rationale: ‘There can be no doubt that cultural and artistic activity needs to receive the same kind of attention, incentive and support that other areas of national development traditionally have received.” (National Cultural Policy)

²    Activities:

  • Opening of Nobel Laureate Week: This included the launching of the National Youth Choir.
  • Primary Schools’ Art and Craft Exhibition
  • Roundtable Discussion with Sir Dwight Venner: Governor, Easter Caribbean Central Bank, on Sir Arthur Lewis’ economic theories and their application to current monetary policy in the OECS.

 

  • Panel Discussion: on “The Role of Arts in Community Development” presented by Labowi Promotions.

 

  • Presentation by Dr. Paul Breslin: “St. Lucian Poetry after Derek Walcott”

 

  • Annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony: at the Sir Arthur Lewis’ Tomb. On the grounds of The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.

Christian Writers’ and Artists’ forum (Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre: The Franciscan Institute for Personal Family Development and the Folk Research Centre). This opportunity was used to present- in lecture, seminar and workshop format- Christian perspectives on art and creative writing. Dr. Jennifer Rahim, part of the Franciscan Team, a Trinidadian Catholic Writer, and academic with the UWI, St. Augustine , presented a key-note address, speaking to the issues of faith and art, with special reference to the contemporary Caribbean .
