Topic: ‘Culture and Politics: Sir Arthur Lewis and the Westminster Inheritance.

“The Fire’s Shadows: Derek Walcott and the Haitian Revolution.”

 

  • Opening Ceremony: Included presentations by the National Youth Choir , St. Lucia School of Music String Ensemble, Diamond Steel Orchestra, Mon Repos Choral Group, Les Danseurs Traditionnels de Ste. Lucie and George “Fish” Alphonse.

The opening ceremony captured the following vision expressed by Sir Arthur:

Our art and music and literature will be clearly distinguishable from that of other peoples. We shall have our own schools of painting and music and poetry and drama and the rest. This is the essential and most valuable sense in which West Indians must be different from other peoples. This is the contribution which above all we know we can make to the common human heritage.”

  • Drama Production: “The Fire’s Shadow: Derek Walcott and the Haitian Revolution” was one of the main events on the calendar of activities for Nobel Laureate Week 2004.

 

  • Launching of the United Nations Literacy Decade: This was a two day regional symposium on the theme “Literacy and Gender – A National concern” hosted by the Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO.

2004 Nobel Laureate Week Lecture

On the occasion of the eleventh anniversary of the observance of Nobel Laureate Week, the Derek Walcott Lecture and the Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture which have become the highlights of this annual observance, will again focus on the legacy of the islands’ two Nobel Laureates, and on the influence they have on local, regional and international developments in economics, culture and the arts.

 

The Derek Walcott Lecture will be presented by Msgr. Hon. Dr. Patrick Anthony who will examine the influence of Derek Walcott and his generation on the artistic, cultural and spiritual development of St. Lucia Society. Msgr. Anthony, cleric, cultural activist and communications specialist holds a Masters degree in theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago , and a Doctorate in Literature from the University of the West Indies . He is the Founder pf the Folk Research Centre, the St. Lucy’s Home for the rehabilitation of street people, The Jubilee Trust Fund and was several years the Chairman of the St. Lucia National Trust. He is currently Director of The Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre, the Editor of the Catholic Chronicle, and a Director on the Central Committee of the World Association for Christian Communication.

 

The Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Professor Selwyn Ryan from Trinidad and Tobago , who will speak on the topic “Culture and Politics - Sir Arthur Lewis and the Westminster Inheritance”. Professor Ryan holds a Bachelors degree in History from the University of Toronto and a Doctorate in Political Science from Cornell University . He has taught at York University in Toronto , the University of Ghana , Makerere University in Uganda , and in the Department of Government of The University of the West Indies . He also served as Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Research at UWI, St. Augustine . Professor Ryan is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies .

 

The Derek Walcott Lecture will be presented on Wednesday, January 21 at the NIS Conference Room from 7:30pm while the Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture will be delivered at the same venue at 7:30pm on Nobel Laureate Day, Friday January 23rd.
