Nobel Laureate Week 2005

²    Theme:            Creativity: The Path to Excellence

²    Activities:

o       The Hilford Deterville Elocution Competition

Hon. Hilford Deterville, President of the St. Lucian Senate, proposed an “Elocution Competition” to essentially reverse the misuse of Standard English in St. Lucia . The competition involved the recitation by students of English language programmes by Derek Walcott. The poems were to be memorised and recited by either individuals or classes. It was felt that the use of English Language poems by Derek Walcott would help to introduce St. Lucian students to the poetry of their Nobel Laureate, as well as increase their appreciation of the use of Standard English by one of their own fellow citizens. This was seen as the most appropriate time to do so, as it was Nobel Laureate week as well as the 75th birthday of Derek Walcott.
